Michael Mirhadi, MD-Abstract Makes Top 10

At the recent ACEP Conference in Boston this October, Dr. Michael Mirhadi presented his poster, "Utility of Additional Radiographs in Patients with Extremity Injuries in ED Patients."  His study was an evaluation of the utility of additional radiographs as ordered by surgical consultants for patients with isolated extremity trauma.

Over 3,000 records were searched and approximately 1,900 patients were reviewed.  In total an incidence of only about 2% of additional positive findings on these additional xrays was found.  Of those, only about 1% of the patients received any change in clinical treatment based on the additional positive findings.

The study was conducted, says Dr. Mirhadi, "because we wanted to see if there was any utility to these additional xrays that cost time, money, and extra radiation exposure."

EP Monthly recently reviewed the top 10 abstracts from the 2009 ACEP Scientific Assembly, and Dr. Mirhadi's abstract made the list for its "great impact."  Congratulations, Dr. Mirhadi!
