Lakeland Health is a not for profit, community-owned system of care serving the southwest Michigan region of Berrien, Cass, and VanBuren counties. Lakeland Medical Center is a 196-bed medical center. The hospital offers a wide array of specialties including oncology, cardiology, obstetrics, behavioral medicine, radiology (including MRI), and much more. This facility is home to an fully accredited Osteopathic Emergency Medicine Residency program that started in 2011. It is also the home of the Frederick S. Upton Education Center, which hosts an array of health education programs for the community.

The emergency department at Lakeland Hospital, St. Joseph sees 43,000 patients annually. Board-certified physicians and physician assistants work interdependently to manage the new 42-bed emergency department. The ED has 40 hours of physician coverage daily, with 8-hour shifts. There is an additional 36 hours of physician assistant coverage daily. Clinicians utilize the EMR Epic®.
